Celebrating National Stamp Collecting Month:
Day of Stamps at Fox Cities Childrens Museum

Six volunteers answered the call of the WFSC to help in the promotion of stamp collecting in Appleton at the Fox Cities Children's Museum, 100 W. College Avenue, on October 10. Those volunteers were WFSC President Maurice Wozniak, Verna Shackleton, Al Marcus, Milt Schreiner MaryAnn Bowman, and Greg Bokelman.

Manning the welcoming table at the door were Maurice and Verna, ready to answer stamp-collecting questions and help with those wanting information about the possible value of their collectibles. At another set of tables on the first floor were Al and Milt with a display of interesting philatelic items and albums showcasing our hobby's collectibles.

On the second floor two additional stations were set up. Greg demonstrated proper soaking techniques for the removal of stamps from envelopes and allowed young interested collectors to make selections from on-paper piles of stamps to take home. MaryAnn brought along 12 different electric circuit board games and the Geo-Safari game boards — each of which features stamps and questions or clues for youth to identify and match.

Several hundred kids and parents were in attendance that day. Many of the kids were under the age of eight and perhaps a little young to understand the finer points of stamp collecting. But those who stopped by to ask questions, look at the displays, and become involved in the hands-on activities, went away with a greater appreciation of stamps. It was a great way to share our wonderful hobby during National Stamp Collecting Month.
