THE WISCONSIN CONNECTION AT STAMPSHOW 97

A definitive stamp, The Stars and Stripes Forever! will have its first-day ceremony at STAMPSHOW on August 21. At first glance, it would appear that this stamp honoring our national march (as legislated by Congress and signed by President Reagan on December 11, 1987) and its famous composer, John Philip Sousa, have no ties to Wisconsin.

A little research, however, uncovered the fact that Sousa celebrated his 72nd birthday in Milwaukee on November 6, 1926. Some of his biggest fans were children, and on the occasion of this birthday, 72 children gave him 72 birthday cakes, each with one candle. It is also known that Sousa played several concerts in Wisconsin, including one in Kohler that is marked with a historical plaque.

Please let us (MaryAnn Bowman or the ATFP editor) know if you are aware of other ties that Sousa had to Wisconsin.

CALL FOR HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS

Nominations are now being accepted for the 1997 Wisconsin Philatelic Hall of Fame. The deadline is December 31, 1997. Qualifications required of nominees are: (1) contributions of a purely local club nature shall not be the sole reason for selection to the Hall of Fame; and (b) a deceased philatelist may not be nominated or considered for selection until three years after his/her death.

Send your nomination(s) together with a statement identifying the nominee, a short philatelic biography, and the reasons why that person should be selected for the Wisconsin Philatelic Hall of Fame to: Karen L. Weigt, Secy., WFSC, 4184 Rose Ct., Middleton, WI 53562-4339.

1997 COVER EXCHANGE PROGRAM

The WFSC will again sponsor a nationwide cover exchange program in which all stamp clubs, philatelic organizations, and individuals may participate. This is an opportunity for clubs with leftover show, commemorative and first-day covers to reduce their inventory by exchanging them for different covers for use as club auction items, door prizes or gifts.

The exchange program is being conducted in conjunction with National Stamp Collecting Month in October. The exchange offer will expire October 31, with returns being made to participants by mid-November.

Participants must submit 10 all-alike covers and a large 55c SASE. In exchange, eight different covers will be sent back. (The extra covers will be used for the WFSC's youth program.) Only unaddressed cacheted covers bearing either pictorial of first-day cancels can be submitted. A maximum of 20 covers can be submitted, and the cover exchange program coordinator reserves the right to return covers considered unsatisfactory for exchange.

To participate, send your covers and a 55c SASE to: WFSC, P.O. Box 1451, Waukesha, WI 53187.

COMMON CACHET

Many Wisconsin communities are planning commemorative events in observance of the Wisconsin Sesquicentennial. In most cases, the celebrations will include a second-day-of-issue or special cancel for the Wisconsin Statehood stamp to be issued May 29, 1998.

The WFSC received a request to produce a Wisconsin Sesquicentennial common cachet for distribution in bulk to member clubs. Clubs could use the cacheted cover in conjunction with their local community cancels.

Initial decisions regarding a common cachet were that it would be printed in one color and clubs will be charged only for bulk mailing and production costs.

Before committing to the project, however, the WFSC Executive Board must assess the level of interest. Your club's response form will be enclosed with your 1998 WFSC member-club dues notice, which will be mailed the first week in December.

The WFSC Executive Board will meet on January 10, where final decisions on the matter of a common cachet must be made. Your responses, therefore, are needed AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!
